The book debunks 63 widely repeated myths about colonial and early American history in short, witty entries—each about a page long, with a color photo illustration.
The title myth: that petticoat fires were the second-leading cause of death for colonial women (after childbirth); in fact, disease was the leading killer, and natural-fiber garments were far less flammable than modern synthetics.
Other myths addressed include pregnant women secluding themselves indoors, uneven stairs built to trip burglars, people bathing only once a year, and the "closet tax."
