Ship of Gold in the Deep Blue Sea

Ship of Gold in the Deep Blue Sea is a 1998 nonfiction bestseller by Gary Kinder, chronicling the 1857 sinking of the SS Central America — a side-wheel steamer carrying nearly 600 passengers and 21 tons of California Gold Rush gold — and its 1989 deep-water salvage by engineer Tommy Thompson and the Columbus-America Discovery Group.

The wreck was the worst peacetime maritime disaster in American history, with over 400 lives lost off the Carolina coast.
Thompson's team recovered the treasure from about 8,000 feet of water using experimental ROV technology; Life magazine called it "the greatest treasure ever found."
The book was an IPPY finalist (1999) and is being reissued in a 20th-anniversary edition by Grove Press, due out October 2026.
