Up Front is a 1945 illustrated memoir by Bill Mauldin, a 22-year-old infantry sergeant in WWII, published by Henry Holt & Company (228 pages). It interweaves Mauldin's wry, plainspoken observations of front-line life with 90+ of his iconic "Willie and Joe" cartoons — the shaggy, mud-caked "dogfaces" he drew for Stars and Stripes during the Italian campaign and in France.
The book is structured as a continuous narrative (no chapters), with Mauldin discussing a topic and placing a related cartoon on the same page. It's considered one of the most authentic first-person accounts of the WWII infantry experience, praised for its dark humor and unflinching honesty.
